After three month peaceful demonstrations and strikes by teachers across Sulaimaniyah and Halabjah, the organizers of teachers’ strike said to move the demonstrations from education board building to political parties headquarters “because this is where the real power lies,” said a teacher. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Sulaymaniyah showed its frustration warned of any confrontation with KDP guards. Ata Shaykh Hassan, spokesman for KDP in Sulaymaniyah and Halabjah, told KDPinfo that the KDP “is ready to listen to any concern and complaint expressed in a peaceful way.” He warned: “However, getting close to our headquarters is a red line.”
In a statement, teachers’ strike organizers announced that the Thursday’s demonstrations will be conducted “in front of political parties building.”
Since the beginning of Fall 2016 education term, the majority of schools remained closed in Sulaymaniyah and Halabjah provinces. The teachers were complaining about local government’s failure to pay their salary in the last two years.
