War in Ankara, battle in Erbil

By Shalaw Fatah He used to be a famous respectable figure, a Kurd known by many to be prestigious on the international level. However, this prestige seemed to decline among people when he wrote an article praising Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and his party. Some people were furious why would such a figure leaves his people, Kurds and HDP, in such a time. Even the extremist Krekar released the first audio statement after his exile concerning the issue. If a foreigner could observe, he would believe that Erdogan and Demirtas were also competing on Erbil, but do they?

Election in Ankara; Battle in Erbil

Kurds have a thing for elections. I remember it was a stir for Obama and Romney in 2012. But none of them has reached Turkey’s elections. This time young people from Kurdistan region show a particular interest in what’s going on in Ankara. They even change their Facebook profile pictures with the logo of HDP, a party not many of them know about its background, and less about its current status. For them, HDP is Kurdish, and Kurds are HDP.

The more interesting stance is shown by those who support Erdogan. It used to be easy for them. They would support Erdogan freely and openly in the past because Erdogan was the champion of the Kurdish issue. However, currently, he’s more of a person that regards his personal status rather than other things. Unlike HDP supporters, AKP supporters seem like to know that, thus they stay silent or urge silence for irrelevancy.
On the government level, the statue of KDP, the major ruling party is clear, they are supporting AKP not only because of their good relation with the party but also because they are the arch competitor of HDP in representing Kurds regionally. Its local arch competitor, PUK, is clearly HDP fan. Gorran is in between by default, but they show more tendency to HDP. Their heart is in one place, and their mind is in another; it happens in Iraq for thousands of years.
The battle of Ankara is waged in Erbil too. However, I don’t know how much oil does it take to fuel this wildfire into the heart of coming geopolitical changes. The only thing is to stand in the peripheries of history, and lovingly observe how easily people mistaken fate for a game.
